Circular Letter to Colonial legislatures.

February 11, 1768

Written by Samuel Adams and approved by the General Court, the letter protests the Townshend Acts, summarizes why Massachusetts opposes them, and asks for cooperation in petitioning for redress. Lord Hillsborough, the new American secretary in London, denounces the letter as “Calculated to inflame the Minds [of colonists].” He demands that it be rescinded by the General Court, which responds in June 1768.*
